Throughout 28 years at the Duquesne City School District, Jennifer Yocca has held a number of roles. She’s been a Title 1 Math and Reading teacher, a Math coach, a Reading Facilitator, an Instructional Coach, and a 1st, 4th, and 5th grade classroom teacher.

Now, as Yocca approaches her 29th year in the district, she’ll be taking on a new role: Dean of Students. For Yocca, a natural leader, mentor, and champion of growth and kindness, the role just makes sense.

“After nearly three decades in teaching, stepping into the Dean of Students job offers fresh challenges and opportunities to grow professionally,” said Yocca.

“I can utilize my extensive experience to mentor and support both teachers and students, fostering a positive and effective learning environment. The opportunity to see the broader impact of my work on the school’s culture and student success can be deeply rewarding.”

In her new role, Yocca will be tasked with providing behavior support modifications and interventions, while also helping implement multi-tiered systems of supports, restorative practices, and PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports). Among her goals, Yocca stated a desire to implement interventions to help students succeed, while also assisting with developing clear and consistent expectations in classrooms, and promoting a positive school culture by encouraging respect, responsibility, and kindness.

In a nutshell, she will look to bridge the gap between academic and social-emotional learning.

“I will not only be focused on discipline, but also involved in shaping the holistic well-being of students,” said Yocca. “I want every student to feel safe, supported, and valued, regardless of the challenges they may face.”

In addition to working with students, Yocca said she plans on working hand-in-hand with teachers, showing them effective ways to implement strong classroom management skills and restorative practices in their classrooms.

A long-time proponent of restorative practices and PBIS, Yocca wants to ensure that her coworkers continue to create positive learning environments in their classrooms.

“When you utilize those tools and are consistent, it just runs the classroom so much smoother,” Yocca said. “I see the value in it and see how my kids have changed. Seeing the success with that makes me want to keep going and show other teachers how it can be successful.”

As the school year approaches, Yocca is excited for this next chapter in her journey at the Duquesne City School District. For nearly three decades, Yocca has been a key component in the fabric of the district. Now, she will see her impact only broaden, as she looks to spread the strong values that have kept her fulfilled and motivated.

“The drive to see students succeed academically and personally is a powerful motivator. Witnessing their growth and development is deeply fulfilling,” Yocca said.

“I’ve built so many strong relationships with colleagues, students, and families over the years. That sense of belonging and community has created a deep connection between me and the district.”
