Employee of the month: Freddy Demery

In each element of his job, Freddy Demery seeks to go above and beyond. Whether it’s keeping the facilities in tip-top shape, helping out a co-worker, or doling out helpful advice, Demery is a true staple at Duquesne City.

For his efforts, Demery, a custodian in the district since 2018, was voted by his peers as March’s Employee of the Month.

“He has helped build a climate of consistent predictability and cleanliness that we all rely on and should never take for granted,” said one coworker.

“Everyday this man looks out for us, warmly greets all staff and students, shares life lessons with students, encourages kids to do the right thing, and keeps our facilities the cleanest he possibly can, and it shows,” said another coworker.

Demery, a Duquesne resident, takes pride in giving back to a community that he loves. For Demery, that means doing his stated job well, but also going the extra mile.

“I love working in my community. I live in Duquesne, and enjoy working with a bunch of people that I know, as well as meeting new people,” said Demery.

“I like helping out everyone. You don’t have to tell me to do something, I’ll just do it. It’s in my nature to always help out. I’m like that at home, too.”

Demery’s friendly demeanor extends to everyone he comes across in the school building. He is very much a part of the fabric of the school district, and always looks to lend a helping hand and sagely advice. One coworker stated that Demery is a mentor to the middle school students in the building. Another simply said, “Mr. Freddy rules.”

For Demery, Duquesne City isn’t just his workplace, it’s his home and family. And it shows, certainly, in his commitment and care.

“I’m a family man,” said Demery. “I like talking to the kids. I have a good relationship with the students here.”
